History Matters (and so does coffee!)
HMASDC
Since the spring of 2020, historian Joanne Freeman has hosted a weekly webcast, History Matters (and so does coffee!), often referred to as HMASDC. Originally a collaboration with the National Council for History Education as a webcast in support of teachers and students during the COVID-19 pandemic, the webcast grew into a beautiful community of teachers and history lovers of all ages, spanning across the globe! As the community continues to grow, so does its outreach!
In a recent episode moderator Annie Evans, from New American History at the University of Richmond, mentioned that K-12 teachers often lack access to the most recent scholarship or funds to purchase new titles for their classroom. The generous members of the History Matters community immediately responded with "tell us how we can help!" From that conversation, our Books for Teachers campaign was born.
Teachers from across Annie's network of K-12 educators, historians, and digital humanities scholars helped crowdsource a list of titles. Members of the HMASDC community began sending books...SO many books! This summer and into the coming school year as Annie and the New American History team travel across the country providing free professional learning sessions for history and social studies educators, she will pack books to give away to teachers in every zip code she visits!
